TelecommunicationsIn the year 2000, the
Independence Light & Power utility added telecommunications to our
services, including a locally owned cable television system and high-speed data
network.
Independence Light & Power is moving ahead rapidly with
technological improvements and innovative ways to link our customers to the
ever-expanding world of telecommunications. We look forward to continuing our
growth and improvements and providing the citizens of the Independence area a
direct connection to the limitlessness information super-highway.
Electric Distribution
 At
Independence Light and Power, Telecommunications, our electric
distribution team consists of 4 linemen and a line superintendent.
Our linemen maintain and install all of the overhead and underground
electrical lines and equipment in our service territory. Together
we have over 52 years of service to our community.

Plant OperationsWe have ten diesel generators
with a total generating capacity of 23,250kw. This is more than enough capacity
to supply our customers needs. They range in vintage from 1949 to 2000 and are
all fully functional.
Having local generation has enabled us to purchase wholesale
power for the community at cheaper rates. Currently we are buying
wholesale power from Wisconsin Public Power Inc. That means
that our generators are on standby and are operated during times
of peak electrical usage or if we loose our interconnection
to the electrical grid. We have lost our connection several
times over the years due to storms or mechanical failures. In
some instances the community would have been without power for
several days. Fortunately we were able to restore power with
our generators within minutes.
We have made numerous upgrades to our facility over the
years to make it more reliable and efficient. We stand ready to serve the needs
of the community as it continues to grow.

Light and Power consists of 4 people and an office manager. The office is
responsible for customer service, billing and all of the accounting. In
addition to billing for our services of electric, cable, Internet and
telephone, we bill for water, sewer and garbage for the city. |
